PHISH and spam will be the main items in the menu of threats in 2006, predicts the software security firm Trend Micro
In its recently released 2005 Roundup and 2006 Forecast, Trend Micro revealed new and more malicious techniques used by criminal syndicates to propagate phishing and spam.
Among these is “spy-phishing” and “spear-phishing,” with downloaded Trojan horses staying longer in infected computers and capturing specific information, which are then sent to their source.
There will be more phishing attacks this year using new social engineering tactics targeted at a smaller scale. The company warns that this approach is more dangerous because confidential information is stolen discreetly, without its victims noticing.
Spam or unsolicited email is also expected to come in more languages other than English while becoming more financially motivated. The company reported that spam in English accounted for 40 percent of all spam last year, with 60 percent in other languages.
The growth rate of non-English spam was pegged at 20 percent in 2005.
