Malware removes rival rootkits

Worm wars get stealthy

Miscreants have created a strain of malware capable of removing rootkits from compromised PCs, only to install almost undetectable backdoor code of its own.

The Pandex Trojan stops previously installed rootkits from working by removing their hooks into system calls. Pandex then installs its own rootkit component, detected by Trend Micro as Pushu-AC.

But Web 2.0 is a different animal. It's server environment of P2P networking, AJAX-generated applications, social networking, bookmarking, media-sharing sites, blogs, wikis, and RSS feeds. A world largely outside of the IT department’s control.

E-Postcard friendly-looking, but damaging

A computer virus masquerading as a digital postcard could install a Trojan, or worm hijacking software on your computer, allowing others full access to your PC.

Simply clicking on the link contained in the e-mail message launches the malicious software (malware). "The bad thing is it opens what they call a back door and what that will do is allow someone at some point to exploit your computer in any number of ways," computer technician Dan Blanchard told NBC News.
