Vulture Central is keeping its eyes peeled for some sort of PayPal glitch or security breach, following reader reports their accounts were debited overnight to pay for Skype services they never ordered.

Both readers are UK residents and longtime PayPal users. Both logged in yesterday to find their accounts had been charged to secure accounts with Skype.

Anti-virus protection gets worse

Antivirus software is getting worse at protecting users from new threats, according to two reports which found malware authors are getting better at disguising their creations.

German computer magazine c't studied 17 antivirus programs and exposed them to completely new samples of malware. What they found wasn't encouraging. Detection rates sank to 20-30 per cent, from 40-50 per cent in a similar test last year.

Cybercrime would not be possible if it were not for the millions of unprotected personal computers on the internet every day. Here's how it sometimes works.

1. A vulnerability is found in Windows, patched up, and information is released to the general public. While thousands of computers are protected, thousands more never download the update.

2. Hours or even minutes later, a cyber criminal designs a virus that takes advantage of the security hole. Many computers remain unpatched and are infected by the new virus. Their security is compromised and their computer is hijacked.
